While the majority of the event aired live, the main event match between Edge and Randy Orton was pre-recorded on June 7. It was the first Backlash event held since 2018 and the final to be titled "Backlash" until 2023; the 2021 and 2022 events renamed the event series to "WrestleMania Backlash".

The event was originally scheduled to take place in Kansas City, Missouri; however, the event had to be relocated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
